Lebanon > alti  > Foreign Travel > Lebanon > Tannourine, Becherre and Surrounding Mountains
On December 28, 2008, I decided to hike a portion of the Lebanon Mountain Trail (http://www.lebanontrail.org) located between Ehden and Qannoubine, passing through the Qadisha Valley, a World Heritage Site famous for its historic monasteries. However, because I could not find the trailhead, I instead ventured out on a driving tour of the Tannourine area, Becherre, the Cedars, and all the beautiful villages in between. Although I didn't hike, it was an amazing day thanks to the picturesque villages, spectacular mountains, and the Khalil Gibran monuments in Becherre.

alti > Khalil Gibran, 1883-1931

Gibran's "The Prophet" is the second best selling book of the 20th Century in the USA, after the Bible.
alti > One can only imagine the inspiration Gibran found growing up in this beautiful area.
alti > I am alive like you, and I am standing beside you.

Close your eyes and look around, you will see me in front of you.

- Gibran's words on his epitaph.

alti > My favorite part is the red-tiled roofs typical of many Lebanese villages. This is Becherre, but I was reminded of the beautiful village of Deir el-Kamar.
alti > Becherre.
alti > I was driving to "The Cedars," an area known for its nationally protected forest of Lebanon's famous tree as well as a big ski resort.
alti > Driving in Lebanon, whether in Beirut or the mountains, can get pretty hairy.
alti > The "Cedars of God" preserve near Becherre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Lebanon Cedar has always been the national emblem of Lebanon, and it is seen on the Lebanese Flag. It is also the main symbol of the Cedar Revolution, along with many political parties in Lebanon such as the Kataeb, the National Liberal Party and the Lebanese Forces (Wikipedia).
alti > The Cedars Ski Resort. I got there just after closing.
alti > I would be skiing in a few days in Faraya, upon my return from Jordan.
alti > As a result of a long history of overexploitation, very few cedars remain in Lebanon.
alti > Does anyone know the name of this cross near The Cedars?
alti > Final view of Becherre before I headed back to Beirut.
