Echo Mountain to Panorama Point : Susan, Shirley and I and our super dogs Rocky and Iran hiked up to Echo Mountain to explore the ruins of the Mt. Lowe Railway (The Railway to the Clouds!) and Alpine Tavern(site of a famous resort that burned down 100 years ago). The day was absolutely gorgeous and our vistas reached from Santa Monica to Catalina to Newport and all points in between. The northern point of our hike took us on the Sam Merrill Trail in areas damaged by September 2009's Station Fire. The photos of the charred mountainsides and burned trees are quite poignant, and it was promising to see some signs of life sprouting up. While far more people visit Inspiration Point, we found the views at Panorama Point (1.1 miles to the west on a flat trail) to be far better without any obstructions.

Mt Baldy Jan 2009 : Snow-capped Mt. Baldy beckoning me all week, asking me to climb it to remind me what I am made of, who I am, and what makes me happy. Despite snow and ice, I strived to reach the 10,064 foot summit where I enjoyed incredible 360 degree views, and most of all, where I examined my soul, faith, and who I really am.

Mt Baldy, June 2008 : Wonderful day up Manker Flats to Mt. Baldy. At 10,064 ft., it's the highest point in LA County and offers an incredible workout. Total hike is about 10.2 miles. And with 4000 feet of gain, it's often used as a training hike for Mt. Whitney. Even with quite a lot of hikers on this popular trail, you can still enjoy solitude and experience the wildness and ruggedness of nature.

East Fork of San Gabriel River -- Bridge to Nowhere and Beyond : Ultimate adventure hike with The Outdoors Club, led by Verdi, along the East Fork of the San Gabriel River up to the historic Bridge to Nowhere built in 1936 (part of an overly ambitious highway construction plan) and now used for bungee jumping. Several of us kept going past the Bridge heading towards Fish Fork Falls. While we didn't make it that far because there is essentially no trail for much of the distance past the bridge so we had to negotiate our way along the river, it was truly a memorable experience.

Falling in the river and getting caught in the raging current -- something I will never forget! This hike isn't strenuous in terms of climbing, but it is strenuous because it requires numerous river crossings and much rock scrambling, and, past the Bridge, bushwhacking.
Total mileage: Approx. 14
Elevation gain: approx 1200 feet
